Final Goodbye

This is it... my last blog post. Although this project resulted in a ton of stress, challenges, and hard work, I am quite sad it is now over. I enjoyed sharing my journey with everyone and the entire creative process, from the brainstorming to the editing. This class has allowed me to express my work the way I have wanted to and this project alone has taught me so much more than I had expected. I hope my dedication and effort are seen through my work and plan on continuing making more shorts in the future.

Thank you for coming along for the ride,
Valentina Lesende

CCR Script

*Camera man knocks on door*
*I open door*
Oh! Hello there! *looks at imaginary watch* You're early, come on in.
My name is Valentina Lesende and I’m super excited to reflect on my Aice Media Studies Project with all of you today. But first, some background information on the film itself!
“The Upside” is a 5 minute short film about a girl using her art and imagination to find the positive side of every problem she encounters. The film goes through her childhood, from elementary school to middle school to graduating from high school.
This short falls under the Children’s film, or Family film genres. Because of this reason myself and my partner, Nicolas Monaco, decided to target kids. They represent such an important demographic as the adult consumers of the future and it allowed us to make the feel-good movie teaching a positive message that we wanted. By focusing it on a dark-subject matter, such as separation from your family and the changes life brings but in a happy light, this short will be understandable and enjoyable for the parents watching the short with their kids as well. Now on to the questions!!!

-How do your products use or challenge conventions and how do they represent social groups or issues?

When it comes to social issues affecting children, they need to cope with the minor conflicts in their life to acquire the skills to handle the more intense, stressful situations later on. We highlighted some of these throughout the film in a light-hearted way for kids to understand.
Most children experience normal social pain. We showed this through the girl completely isolated on the swings, looking sad and alone as she barely swung. A nice girl then appears wanting to swing with her and the sadness goes away.
Moving on, middle school can be a psychologically demanding experience. A big one is insecurity and bullying. Since this is the age where kids begin dating, we used this to show her struggling with teasing and being hurt, but then getting empowered and finding that what she dresses or what she does shouldn’t be affected by other’s. Her insecurity disappears and these social issues no longer affect her as she sees that being alone is better than being with bad company.
Later on in life, the more intense experiences begin affecting everyone. I decided to show the first big conflict many people face as they enter adulthood - separation. I showed this through the main character leaving to college and separating herself from her family, but then looking back into her life to show the new adventures, new friendships, new independence, and other opportunities that will arise with it.
For this project, we decided to both embrace and challenge many typical conventions. Beginning with the short, it had 2-3 main character just as most do. Because of the target audience and length of the film it was definitely something we had to embrace. Speaking of the length, we kept it 5 minutes which (other than being a requirement) was something we wanted to follow as well to keep it short and interesting. However, we went against the common conflict being good v evil and made it more person vs. self and person vs. society as we tried to show the injustices life presents in a happier manner.
For the postcard, I used images from the film to create a sense of continuity, but differentiated the image by editing the opacity and brightness. I kept the postcard in a horizontal format as most do and used the most popular convention by including where and when the film can be found on the back. I also included a short overview to increase intrigue and curiosity in audiences along with the website and instagram for them to better connect with us and want to go watch it.
Lastly, my website! I chose to include a home page and cast and crew page as most do because I felt they were essentials in any short film website. I even included the social media too and made sure to highlight it so audiences wouldn’t miss it. However, I challenged many conventions as well. I chose to not have an about page because I added the overview of the film on the postcard shown in the website as well and felt it was not necessary when it came to this short since it would give too much away. I also added the short film because although I know most don’t to make profit, since it is the first production I used it mostly to get our names out and peak interests. I personally wouldn’t pay for a short from somebody whose work I haven’t seen before, so figured most wouldn’t either.

-How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

I wanted the different products of my production to work together to create a sense of branding, so I added some specific elements. Here, let me show you. Firstly the pictures on the postcard. I used these pictures from the film for audiences to identify it with the short. The picture from the back was also used both on the website AND the instagram for them to all work together and make it easy for viewers to tie them all together. I also re-used these two images for further identification with the short and directors.
Another thing I decided to play with was the color scheme. Because the film was created aimed towards kids, I wanted to play with bright colors and maintain the child and family mood. Starting with the short, there are several scenes shot outdoors and bright colors used from the notebook to the clothing. I also made green a very prominent color to make sure they all fit together well. When looking at the instagram, these bright colors are seen both in the posts and on the saved story, through the images themselves and the colors and stickers I used to edit them. On the website, the same colorful image is the first thing users see, then the green is further highlighted through the cast and crew page on the images, and the colors on the behind the scenes images and videos just top it all off. Lastly, on the postcard these colors are seen on the front, but since they were not bright enough and the back is black and white, I added stickers and made the words colorful for that pop of color it was missing and to make sure people can tell who the film is aimed towards just by looking at this.

-How do your products engage with the audience and how would they be distributed as real media products?

My products engage with the audience in several different ways, some which I have already discussed. The young target audience is represented by the bright colors I incorporated in every product and enjoys the simplistic, fun content we created. Going even further, the genre tends to play on the possibility that imagination holds, which this short focus on and shows continuously.
But, when it comes to engaging with audiences I want to focus on something I incorporated heavily, which is making them feel as if they were a part of the production. On the website, I not only included behind the scenes images, but I incorporated video exclusives. Instead of making blooper videos which tend to be cliché, I made some small 30 second to minute long clips highlighting important moments in the production. From the longest and most intricate filming day I’ve ever had with Paz to every moment that working with kids got complicated with the repeated laughs, it is on the website to be viewed and experienced by others. I even went a step further and included my blog on the website, which I have not seen anyone do before, but felt it was the main component in bringing audiences along for the whole ride from day one.
The other main element I incorporated was the instagram page. I distributed it on the website and postcard as well and chose instagram specifically because it is the most popular social media platform for the target audience I chose. I used the account for people to better understand the short by seeing behind the scenes images and videos and feel better connected with the cast and crew. This exclusive footage also makes them feel further involved and intrigued, making them want to follow this product and my later products as well.
As for the distribution, I chose Sundance which “actively advances the work of independent storytellers” and is a big film festival to get the word out to huge audiences. I also put the short on the website for those who were unable to attend the festival to watch it online and get familiarized with my work.

-How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

Lastly, I wanted to show you some technologies I integrated. Starting with software, we used Premiere Pro to edit the short film because it allows us to play around more and do much more than iMovie. I used iMovie for the simple behind the scenes clips on the website. We used Canva to create the postcard since it gave us the freedom to create something unique and free. I used Wixsite creator to create the website and the app PicCollage to edit and photoshop the Instagram images , reviews, and postcard picture. Finally I used Blogger to create all of my blogs.
On to Hardware, we used my iPhone X camera to record all of the film and behind the scenes footage, iPhone headphones to get the audio recording for the outside scene with Paz since it was too far and windy, a tripod our teacher let us borrow to keep all footage stable, set lights for indoor scenes that were too dark, and a MacBook Air to edit the film, postcard, and website.
Of course, without using my online resources, I wouldn’t have been able to do my research, create my blog, get the sound effects, create the Instagram page, or even make the website.
Before I go I wanted to give a special shoutout to the actors and my partner. I hope you all enjoyed the short as much as I enjoyed making it despite A LOT of challenges.
Goodbye for now, it’s a wrap!!

Finishing the Postcard and Editing the Short! (part 2)

Hi again! The last blog got a bit lengthy and it got late... so here I am again! Where was I? Let's continue.
Now that the postcard is complete, it is time for the editing! As I edited the postcard, Nico worked on putting the clips in order and finding the right ones we will use in the short to start editing. It took him a while too, but after putting it together, he started the rough draft. The way we did this was for us to approve the clips together and after he made every edit, he would show it to me. I would either approve it, disapprove it, or change it myself. By combining his ideas with mine, the film started coming together!
We started with Oriana's scene because it was what Nico had started originally and we knew it would take a long time. Nico had to go clip by clip and frame by frame to try to match the previous clip to the current clip and make it look as smooth as possible. Let me tell you, it was HARD. Oriana didn't exactly spin in place and although I told her to spin with her arms up each time to make it as similar as possible for us to edit it, she didn't always do that. I then told Nico to try adding camera flashes to try to disguise the rough transitions.
Nicolas went on Youtube and looked up tutorial videos. After some trial and error, it stopped looking like a random white screen and looking more like camera flashes. I found a nice sound effect and had Nico add it with changing volume levels so it didn't sound fake. These flashes definitely improved the scene immensely and helped make the transitions much smoother. The first transition wasn't as smooth as we desired, but then the next two came out much better than we expected... so we were happy.
Another scene that challenged us immensely was the final scene with Martina and myself. Since we recorded outside on a windy day and the camera was too far from us for the sound to be clear, I recorded every shot on a phone (I've mentioned this on a previous blog). Trying to match the 10 minute voice notes with the videos that we were using was a PAIN. It took Nicolas (no joke) about 25 minutes to find the right voice notes that could work and more time to try to match it perfectly with the mouths. I also sometimes mixed around two words and it messed up the voice recordings, which I did subconsciously and it came back to bite us.
For the final imagination, we decided to create flashbacks rather than imaginations. Having the main character look back on her treasured memories to see all of the possibilities that could come with her separation from her family gave it the nice, emotional ending we wanted for the film. Nicolas and I clearly challenged ourselves like we never have before through all of our difficult transitions, but took it even farther this time. When filming, we shot it backwards in order to draw the perfect shot in frame to be able to transition it later on. But, as easy as we tried to make it, it still wasn't. These transitions kept looking awkward or the drawings weren't aligned with the people in the actual scene, etc. Nicolas and I shot a variety of angles and clips that day to make sure we could change it in case the editing process went roughly, and thank the media angels that we did.
We started changing the clips and matching them to see which transition looked the best and I am so happy to say that these scenes are by far my favorite. The transitions went so smoothly for the equipment and software we have!! I am very proud of our work.
Up next, Nico went through all of the clips from Paz's imagination to put together a montage. I came up with the order to make it look as diverse as possible and Nico put them together. We decided on where to cut what clips and then finished another scene. After all of this editing and working, my mom called us to eat dinner. It was 8:30pm. I have never worked for 6 hours and a half STRAIGHT without taking a break before in my life. We ate dinner and then continued working. After I finished my postcard, I worked on getting the sound effects and songs for the short. I must have gone through over two hundred videos and sounds (no exaggeration) to find all of the sounds we used in the short. From the wind and bird effects we added to Paz's outdoor scene to make it sound real to the sad piano tune we added in the beginning to the remixed songs we added in the mansion imagination scene, I wanted everything to be perfect and am quite happy with the outcome.
After stopping for thirty minutes to have dinner, Nico ended up leaving at 11pm. We worked on this short for eight. hours. in. one. day. It was INSANE. My head was pounding at this point and Nicolas and I both went straight to bed afterwards. We plan on getting together 2 to 3 more times before the project is due to finish up the final touches!

Finishing the Postcard and Editing the Short! (part 1)

After the unfortunate events I spoke about on my last blog that shall not be named again, Nico and I knew we had to make up for the lost time. Two days ago, Nicolas came over and we started the process. Since all of the clips and Premiere Pro is only on Nico's computer, we came up with a strategy to be most effective. As Nicolas started editing the short, I started editing the postcard. All we had so far was the front of the postcard and Oriana's scene. The front of the postcard was visually pleasing, simple, and exactly what we wanted. As for Oriana's scene, it was 'eh.' Knowing we had a ton of work ahead of us, we sat down and started working at 2pm.
Let's focus on the postcard first. It took so. incredibly. long. We started with an image of the notebook. We wanted to make the back an image that allowed us to add the information next to it or somewhere that it was easy to read and see. However, the notebook picture that I took was only the notebook placed on the gravel floor of a playground. It looked great, but did not allow us to add the information. In order to fix this, I added the same image over and over again on the right of the postcard by cropping only the gravel floor. This way, it looked like the notebook was on the left and the rest of the image was the ground. It let me place the information on the right side of the postcard while the notebook made it look better being on the left.
It started off great, but then everything went wrong. The information was hard to read because the gravel floor wasn't solid. I made it all white on top of the black background and it helped, but what really fixed it was making the picture black and white. However, I didn't like it. I tried to add some color by adding colorful stickers Canva let me use for free on top of it, but it didn't help. I moved everything around for an hour and played with stickers, but NOTHING. I gave up and deleted it all. Until I came up with something I loved, I refused to leave it. So after an hour and a half of work, I restarted.
I went on my phone and started looking through every single video and picture on my phone since the start of this project. I searched until I found a perfect one. The image of me holding the notebook with Paz makes perfect sense after people watch the short and makes it look better, by appearing as if one side is from the front and the other side is from the back. Although it might make more sense for them to be backwards with the image of us facing the camera on the front and the image of us from the back being on the back side, I wasn't changing it. The current front was perfect and the front picture on the back would give me the same issue as the notebook would, which wouldn't work.
I started by placing information in between the two bodies. With the colors, it wasn't happening. I tried lowering the opacity and ended up making it black and white. The showtimes I added were a bit more visible now, but a shadow in the back stopped in the center and made the background white, making it unable to be read. I went on my FaceTune app and made the shadow go more to the right and it worked! Then, I found a nice line of dots to separate the title "Showtimes" with the actual showtimes which looked much better.
I then went on to the times and dates. I googled the Sundance film festival and got the right dates and times to make it as real as possible and corrected them. However, the outline I used didn't let me add the "pm" and "am." After a while, I finally solved it by adding small textbooks to the right of the times with the missing letters and trying to match it up as much as I could to make it look natural. Since this was all the information we wanted to add, I was technically done. However, I didn't like it. It was too dark for the family film we created. This postcard wasn't aimed towards our target audience and didn't match the bright colors I have been using on every other element of this project. For this reason, I started searching for stickers and changing their colors to add bright ones all around the image.
At first, I tried adding stickers all around it to fill the empty space, but I asked my mom for an outside perspective and she said it looked too full. I took out all of the irrelevant stickers and left only a light bulb which symbolizes the imagination and a paint splatter which symbolizes the art used to show them. It still looked too dark, so I took to PicCollage and spent 25 minutes cutting out the notebook from the colored image and trying to fit it perfectly onto the black and white image on my tiny iPhone screen. However, it worked perfectly! I changed the background image and with that pop of color on the middle with the notebook, it looked 100 times better. I was still not done, however. It looked too empty.
I looked at some sample projects from last year projects and saw that many included brief descriptions. I tried doing this on the top and it wasn't read. I tried adding it to the bottom and it wasn't read, again. I started changing the color of the text, but it seemed to disappear in the image. I tried EVERYTHING, until I finally found a cool white shape that I placed on top of the picture. I lowered the opacity and put the text on top and it helped! But, some words still disappeared. I started changing the colors of the words and struggled finding different colors that weren't too dark or too light for the area of the image where they were placed, but I did it. Almost done!! Now, all that was left was the top. It still looked too empty for me.
In order to fix this, I re-wrote the title on the top and matched the font to the one on the front for continuity. I made the spaces in between the words much wider and changed the colors to finish it up! I photoshopped the image once more to make the tree in the back wider for the "P" to be easily read and was done! I got the feedback from Nicolas and my mom and everyone approved! Finally done! After four to five hours of stress and changing it and adding/removing, I actually did it.

The Worst Luck On This Planet

Some of you may be wondering….you spent hours every day filming, you spent hours every day finishing the website, you did a ton of research, but have you not edited the short!? Well, there’s a reason why I have yet to mention it. Since I left on my trip, I created the whole website and Nicolas said he would start editing until I got back and we could finish it together. I texted him several times a day and got absolutely no replies. I was getting worried that nothing was getting done, but had no option other than wait until I got back. The day I returned and went to school, Nicolas told me what had happened. He had created a rough draft of the short. It was roughly seven minutes (still missing the parts we hadn’t filmed), but at least the clips we were planning on using were in order.

He put his computer away and when he re-opened it, it was all gone.

     The. Entire. Thing. Was. Gone.

The only project that appeared was 30 seconds worth of Oriana’s scene, which was the first thing Nicolas had edited. After this happened and he got over the annoyance and anger, Nicolas edited once again in his first period. However, Premiere Pro constantly freezes on his computer and heats it up, while drowning the battery at the same time. He edited and got pretty far in the hour and a half he had to catch up, but at the end of the period, his computer died. He then entered second period, which is Media Studies with me! When he told me this, I started scouting the room for a laptop charger and got one for him. He connected it to the wall and just like that, the computer turned on again. He opened the application to show me the progress he had made that day and… only the 30 seconds of Oriana’s scene appeared.

     It. Happened. Again.

At this point, I didn’t know if Nicolas was lying and never did it or if the application just didn’t work or if the universe hates us. But, I decided that getting frustrated and stressed would do nothing to benefit this project. So instead of doing that, I started editing the short with him. We were able to make some progress in class, but as the computer started up again I decided to check on the postcard. Nicolas said he would start the postcard while I worked on the website because the website takes way longer and is a lot of work. However, I log on to his Canva to see his progress and I do not see anything. At this point, I wanted to cry.

But, again, I held back the anxiety and just got to work. I first picked an outline that I felt would look great for the postcard and opened up some high scoring postcards from previous years’ projects. Now that I have the pictures to put on the postcard, I already knew what images to edit and how I wanted them to be put, but wanted to discuss the information we would add with Nicolas first. We started discussing this, but then the computer turned on. Nicolas asked a classmate what he does to keep it saved and he told us that his autosave never works either. Nico made an update for the application and it stopped freezing! He then learned how to save it himself from our classmate and we will now begin saving our progress every five minutes to make sure this does not happen again. Long story short, today sucked. However, this weekend we will finish the postcard and begin editing, so I am confident with time and effort that it will all work out! I believe in good karma and with the work I’ve put in, I have faith that this project will turn out great.
